Hirohiko Araki Comments on Prince: Beautiful Strange Documentary

Hirohiko Araki comments on the Prince: Beautiful Strange documentary, admiring that it released in Japan on Prince’s birthday on June 7, 2024.

Prince: Beautiful Strange (プリンス ビューティフル・ストレンジ) is a Japanese translation of the documentary Mr. Nelson On The North Side which originally released in Canada on April 24, 2021. The film released in Japan on June 7, 2024.

The official Japanese website for the film posted a comment from the creator of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Hirohiko Araki, on May 23, 2024.

The documentary explores the life of the American musician Prince, who passed away on April 21, 2016. It includes stories from other music icons like Chaka Khan, Chuck D, and Billy Gibbons.

Hirohiko Araki’s Comment

Prince really perfected such a unique and stylish musical art form. I want to experience the time when that was taking place. It’s also divine that this film is being released on His Highness’s birthday.

本当に唯一無二のカッコイイ音楽芸術を創り上げたプリンス。
それが出来行く時間を体験したい。殿下のお誕生日の公開というのも神がかっている。

Araki and Prince coincidentally share the same birthday, June 7, though Araki was born 2 years after. “His Highness” is a common nickname for Prince among Japanese fans.

Araki has always loved Prince’s music, with his songs influencing various aspects of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. For example, one of Muhammad Avdol‘s chickens is named “Prince“, Josuke Higashikata‘s favorite musician is Prince, Giorno Giovanna, JoJolion‘s Josuke Higashikata, and Yasuho Hirose‘s Stands have names based on Prince songs (Gold Experience, Soft & Wet, Paisley Park), and some of the noises in Prince’s music influenced the onomatopoeia in Araki’s manga.
