The film Papillon, starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, is set to be re-released nationwide in Japan on Friday, January 31, 2025. The re-release commemorates the 50th anniversary of its Japanese debut. It originally released on December 16, 1973 in the United States and March 16, 1974 in Japan.
Papillon is an adventure drama film that adapts Henri Charrière’s autobiographical novel. Tokyo Theatres is screening the film as “ACT 5” of their classic film re-release project, “Theatres Classics”, starting on January 31, 2025. An advance screening event will be held on January 12, 2025.
The official X/Twitter account for Theatres Classics posted a comment from the manga artist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Hirohiko Araki, today on November 29, 2024.
Hirohiko Araki’s Comment on Papillon
The true story of a prison break—can such events really happen to a person? I was left speechless.
And when Steve McQueen breaks out, even the most grotesque situations become a hopeful and beautiful adventure story.
「脱獄」の実話って、人間にここまでの出来事が起こるのか? と言葉を失う。
そしてスティーヴ・マックィーンが「脱獄」すると、どんな醜悪なものの中にも、希望ある、美しい冒険物語になる。
